Der Westbalkan und die Visegrad-Gruppe sind zwei Makroregionen innerhalb eines größeren osteuropäischen Raums. Beide Regionen sind sich geografisch und historisch nahe und weisen auf makroregionaler Ebene sowie auf nationaler Ebene, der einzelnen Ländern der Region, vergleichbare Merkmale auf. Kommt man zur Frage der Identität, scheint die nationale Ebene jedoch unvermeidbar: Politisch bedeutet Identität vor allem nationale Identität.

Im Buch, das in Rahmen dieser Veranstaltung vorgestellt wird, untersuchen, die aus den Regionen stammenden Autoren/innen, wie das Gefühl der regionalen Zugehörigkeit, die Unzulänglichkeiten der nationalen Identität überwinden könnten. Die Vielfalt der Fallstudien konzentriert sich auf Identitätsaspekte und deren politischen (Missbrauch) durch Akteure in den untersuchten Regionen.

The Western Balkans and the Visegrad Group are two macro-regions within the larger Eastern European area. Geographically and historically close, both regions share comparable characteristics on the macroregional level as well as among the region's individual countries on the national level. However, when it comes to identities, the national scale seems unavoidable: politically speaking, identity, first of all, means national identity.
In the book, which will be launched during the event, the authors coming from both regions, examine the ways in which the very sense of regional belonging might – or might not – trump the shortcomings and deadlocks of national identity. The variety of case studies focus on identity aspects and their political (mis)use by actors in the regions under study.
