Centre for Law and Economics

The Centre for Law and Economics is a forum to connect the economic and legal research interests at AUB. In the framework of the specialities defined by the university's research strategy, the Centre concentrates on the development and conditions of the market economic system in the region and the questions of European economics integration.

Projects on the following thematic areas are at the forefront:

Enterprises and their Types

Research focuses on the cornerstone of the free market economic system, enterprises, and with them, their internal structures and border-crossing groups as well as the internationalisation of small and medium enterprises (SME) in Central and Eastern Europe.

State and Market in Central Europe

The relationship between state and market, the state's private-sector forms of action, the regulatory intrusions into the economic activities were not only difficult tasks in the framework of the transformation processes, but rather a dilemma which remains to be solved in the framework of competition law and policy, procurement law or market regulation.

Economic Analysis of the Law

The efficacy of the legal order as a mechanism of incentive and inspection, the effects of the law on the economy, and the influence of economic interests on the systems of distribution and risk management are at the forefront of academic research worldwide, whereby it acquires an explosive nature in the countries in transition.

The Centre for Law and Economics advances the above research emphases in the framework of research projects, workshops and conferences as well as through the publication of articles, anthologies and monographs. The targeted procurement of research funds for selected problems is an inherent component of its research strategy. A considerable concern for the contributors is the international networking of other scientists active in these areas. The Centre is open to all colleagues of the university who share its research interests.
