The research specialities of the Danube Institute lie in the area of European integration and the specific transformation processes of Central and Eastern European countries as well as their repercussions on the European Union. Additionally, there is particular interest in the strategies and politics of the EU which are directed at the development of the region as well as the neighbouring states to the east and on those of the Western Balkans.

The goal is to raise the profile of AUB with its interdisciplinary research specialities about the current developments in the policies on integration, accession and the neighbourhood of the Union. At the same time, the university should be developed into a think tank in the region about the region with a view of its specific developments and problems. In this way, the existing competencies in all the disciplines present uniquely have an optimal effect for the European transformation processes as well as for the region.
